Clifton Karhu (1927 - 2007) Original Japanese Painting on Illustration Board
Gion Street with Red Fabric Drying

Signed 'Karhu' by the Artist

Gion Street with Red Fabric Drying - Extremely rare, original Clifton Karhu painting of a street scene with lengths of red fabric stretched out to dry. The cloth twists slightly in the breeze, gently curving as it hangs from cords at either end of the image, creating a handsome contrast to the repeated verticals of the wooden pillars, walls, and windows. The sinuous, repeated lines of the neat rows of roof tiles also add an organic contrast to the geometry of the building. Subtle shades of soft blue gray, ochre, and green are visible upon closer inspection. Painted with sumi ink and watercolors on illustration board, and signed Karhu at bottom right in black. A beautiful rhythmic design that would make a striking display. Original paintings by Karhu are almost never seen on the market. This rare painting is a fantastic find and a great choice for the serious collector.

From a Kyoto Estate – This original painting was purchased from a Kyoto estate and was originally acquired directly from Karhu. After Karhu’s death his works have gone up in value significantly. This is the only original Karhu painting we have seen offered and is a rare “must have” for the serious Karhu collector. Bid or by now!

Clifton Karhu - Born in Minnesota, Clifton Karhu lived and worked in Japan for more than fifty years, becoming one of the most important western artists working in the medium of traditional Japanese woodblock prints. Karhu served in Japan as a soldier in the U.S. Army, studying at the Minneapolis School of Art before returning to Japan permanently in the early 1950s.

Karhu’s colorful images of Japan, mostly of Kyoto where he lived, are lively designs celebrating the beauty and wonder of Japan and its ancient culture. His jewel-like colors, bold line work, and lyrical patterns create a vibrant portrait of his adopted country. Karhu exhibited widely, both in Japan and internationally, and his work can be seen in museums such as the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.
