Original Kunisada II (1823 - 1880) Japanese Woodblock Print
Toneri Umeomaru

Comments - Handsome kabuki portrait of an actor in the role of Toneri Umeomaru, one of three samurai triplets who become the victims of divided loyalties. Strolling outside Yoshida Shrine in Kyoto one night, he stumbles into another samurai, who turns out to be his brother, Sakuraomaru. He seems taken aback, raising his straw hat for a better look. He wears a boldly checked blue and white kimono over a red robe patterned with his namesake plum blossoms (ume) and an under robe trimmed with fringe. He strikes a pose with his feet firmly spread, his flared wig and red stage makeup giving him an imposing appearance. The red shrine fence can be seen in the background beneath the dark sky. A nice expressive figure, detailed with burnishing in the black obi.

Artist - Kunisada II (1823 - 1880)

Image Size - 14" x 9 3/4"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. A couple pinholes, not noticeable. Creasing, faint toning. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
