Shunkan Holding Mirrors, 1850

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene from the life of the warrior Shunkan, who was exiled for plotting against Taira no Kiyomori. Here, he holds out a mirror in each hand, staring down at one with an angry frown. Oyasu, the wife of Kameo, kneels at left with a worried expression, watching him in alarm. Her daughter stands beside her mother, throwing her hand out at her side. A rustic wooden verandah overlooks snow-covered mountains, and icicles hang from the eaves overhead. From left, the actors are Sawamura Yoshijiro I as Tokujumaru, Onoe Baiko IV as Oyasu, and Sawamura Chojuro V as Shunkan Sozu. Nice expressive figures with a handsome winter background.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 14" x 19 1/2"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Two separate panels. Small tear at top of left panel, a few thinning spots along edges, a few small holes. Slight soiling, slight rubbing near edges. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
