Inspiring Tales of History, Complete Set with 16 Images, 1897 - Interesting set of Meiji era woodblocks depicting inspiring heroes from Japanese history. The set is comprised of 6 panels, each with two images, attached together with a title block at the top. These handsome designs focus on great samurai, including these subjects: Akechi Mitsuhide escaping on his horse across Lake Biwa after his defeat at the Battle of Yamazaki by Hideyoshi's forces; Sakai Tadatsugu beating a drum during the Battle of Mikatagahara; and Oishi Yoshio, the leader of the real-life 47 ronin, holding his fan high as he signals the ronin to attack Kira Yoshinaka's palace. Beautifully expressive figures, drawn with fine line work. A great group of classic warrior scenes, in an unusual presentation. Would make a fascinating display.
