Original Chikanobu (1838 - 1912) Japanese Woodblock Print
Passenger and Palanquin Bearers, 1881

Comments - Vibrant kabuki scene featuring a passenger chatting with her palanquin bearers as they stop for a rest during her journey. Standing next to the palanquin, she grins happily, her wrists draped over a slender bamboo pole resting across her shoulders. She wears a purple outer kimono patterned with chrysanthemums over a red floral under robe, a black lacquer hat tied beneath her chin with a red cord. Both men stare at her with worried frowns, each stripped to the waist from the exertion of the trip, their red stage makeup indicating aragoto or brash, bombastic kabuki roles. Red maple leaves frame the dark night sky, and fields stretch into the distance. A lively image with large colorful figures and an interesting setting.

Artist - Chikanobu (1838 - 1912)

Image Size - 13 3/4" x 27 3/4" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three separate panels. Vertical fold near edge of each panel. Slight separation at ends of fold in center panel, a couple small holes, repaired. Faint toning, slight wrinkling. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
