Series; Famous Restaurants of the Eastern Capital

Famous Restaurants of the Eastern Capital - Handsome print from a collaborative series by Toyokuni III and Hiroshige, published between 1852 and 1853. Toyokuni III created the large actor portraits in the foreground, with Hiroshige designing the smaller landscape and still-life insets relating to the featured restaurant or its location. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has many of these images in its collection. These attractive designs are beautifully colored and detailed, making them a great choice for a collector interested in Edo era woodblocks.

Fujiya Restaurant, 1852 - Handsome portrait of Onoe Matsuroku I as Tsubone Iwafuji in the famous drama "Kagamiyama Moto-no-nishikie." A senior lady-in-waiting, the jealous Iwafuji caused the suicide of her junior Onoe by exchanging a sandal for a valuable statue in Onoe's care. She looks over her shoulder with a sinister scowl, one handed tucked inside her obi. She wears a black kimono with a beautiful burnished geometric and floral pattern and carries an umbrella, her hair pulled back into a matronly style, simply adorned with one hairpin. The inset by Hiroshige above show the beautiful coast of Susaki, with white sails dotting the calm blue water, with a vignette of shells on the beach at left. A great image from this classic play, with fine detail in the hair and delicate embossing on the white kimono trim.
