Yoshiwara Courtesans in Spring, 1857

Comments - Terrific scene of a busy street in the Yoshiwara with courtesans strolling beneath blossoming cherry trees. At left, a young samurai looks up with a smile from a long letter. Two men in short blue robes and black leggings follow him, each carrying a shakujou, a traditional pilgrim's staff topped with a ringed finial. A few young kamuro or child apprentices are next, with attendant and servants walking after them. At right, a servant shelters a high-ranking courtesan with an umbrella as she totters along on tall wooden geta sandal. At far right, a man with a tattooed leg balances a small red lacquer table on his head, laden with food, a sake bottle and dishes. A blind man with a cane walks next to him. An intriguing springtime scene set in the pleasure district.
