Saito Oniwakamaru Fighting a Giant Carp - Terrific illustration from the story of Oniwakamaru (the young Benkei) and the giant carp. While studying at a temple, Oniwakamaru learned that a giant carp had eaten his mother when she fell in a pool at the foot of Bishamon Waterfall. He immediately left his studies and hunted down and fought the monster to avenge her death. Here he clings to the back of the enormous fish as it dives through the swiftly moving water, gripping his knife between his teeth. The current sweeps across the river in gently curving waves, carefully shaded to add a sense of depth. A fantastic composition, with the beautifully detailed fish nicely filling the page. A dramatic and bold design, considered one of the best from this unusual Yoshitoshi series. The Los Angeles County Museum of Art has this image in its collection.
