The Sixth Month, a Triptych

Series; Twelve Months by Two Artists

The Sixth Month, a Triptych - Lovely scene of one man and a group of beauties enjoying the evening cool on platforms built out over the water. At left, the man grabs the wrist of a beauty holding out her sake cup for a refill, perhaps concerned that she has hand enough. In the center a woman plays the shamisen, looking up at her companions at left. A waitress wearing a red apron kneels next to the musician, having just delivered a large tray holding a platter of fish and bowls of food. The sky begins to darken as night falls above the gently rippling current. Beautifully drawn with elegant, flowing line work and soft color. A terrific illustration of daily life in old Edo, rarely seen in reprint.
