Kabuki Portraits, 1854

Comments - Interesting triptych featuring eight portraits of kabuki actors in a variety of roles. The inset at bottom left shows Yosaburo, the dishonored son of a merchant, who was captured during a tryst with a gang boss's mistress, Otomi, and slashed all over. The scarred young man became a petty criminal. A priest is shown just above him, wearing a gray hood and a gray kimono with a burnished geometric pattern. At bottom center, a samurai looks down with a sad expression, holding a folding fan. The light blue background in the inset is dusted with mica. Some of the other figures are detailed with touches of embossing or burnishing. The portrait insets are shown on a placard resting on metal hooks cushioned with tie-dyed cloth. A handsome design, nicely detailed.
