Series; A Brief History of Japan in Pictures
Sato Tadanobu Throwing a Go Board, 1878 - Incredible image of the great warrior Sato Tadanobu fighting off the samurai sent to arrest him. According to legend, after a former mistress betrayed his hiding place, Tadanobu used a go board to fight off more than 200 policemen attacking him. Here, he steps on the head of a samurai sprawling on the floor as he agilely flings a go board at the oncoming group of guards. Game pieces scatter everywhere as the overturned container flies through the air amidst a tangle of weapons. A great dynamic image from this famous incident.
