Visiting a Shrine, 1884

Series; A Hundred Views of Musashi

Visiting a Shrine, 1884 - Handsome design of people visiting a shrine in spring, the grounds dotted with blossoming cherry trees. A beauty with her back to the viewer frames the scene, wearing a floral kimono over a red under robe, tied with a red print obi. She claps her hands with amusement as she watches the antics of a pair of men chasing women, wearing a ring on one finger. Two stone markers can be seen at upper left, and a torii gate leads to the temple buildings at right. An interesting design from this rarely seen Kiyochika series patterned on Hiroshige's "One Hundred Famous View of Edo," using similar compositions to provide updated views of Meiji Tokyo, which lies in Musashi Province.
