Harunobu (1724 - 1770) Japanese Woodblock Reprint
Burning Love Letters

Goyo Studio Reprints - Hashiguchi Goyo is the undisputed master of the 20th century shin-hanga movement. A secondary part of his career was reprinting beautiful old ukiyo-e designs from the golden age of the Japanese woodblock print. Between 1918 and 1920, much of Goyo’s artistic work was devoted to creating these incredible woodblock reprints of classic ukiyo-e prints. Each image was painstakingly copied from an original and stamped with the Goyo circular seal. Line by line, color by color, the prints were recreated in Goyo’s studio to perfectly emulate these masterworks of ukiyo-e. Goyo took pride in this work and the release of his reprints was met with great acclaim.

Today, original Goyo reprints are highly sought after by collectors and rare to find. This is an exceptional opportunity!

Comments - Interesting design of a beauty burning love letters, the smoke conjuring up an image of her former lover. She kneels next to a brazier, pulling on the sleeve of her outer kimono as she watches the figure appear above the roaring flames. A tobacco set rests on the floor nearby, with a bed and folding screen behind. An intriguing image, beautifully colored and detailed.

Image Size - 10 3/4" x 8 1/4" + margins as shown

Condition - This print excellent color and detail as shown. Slight paper remnants or thinning on reverse at one edge from original folio mounting. Faint toning, slight creasing and a few small paper remnants at right edge. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
