Enjoying Plum Blossoms in Spring Mist: Mitsuuji with Sodenoko and Katsuragi, 1858

Comments - Lovely early spring scene of Mitsuuji, the County Genji, enjoying plum blossoms at night with two companions. The young nobleman smiles happily as he looks up at the ancient tree, admiring the flowers. At left, the beautiful Katsuragi kneels beside a sign, holding his sword upright, looking sweetly up at him. At right, Sodenoko grins happily, lifting the edges of her kimono. The white plum blossoms contrast beautifully with the dark night sky, the rugged trunk of the tree rendered in bold calligraphic strokes. A beautiful subject with soft bokashi shading in the sky, and fine detail in the sumptuously patterned fabrics, including embossing in the white kimono collars and trim.
