Ichikawa Danjuro as a Rogue

Series; Actors as Five Men of the White Waves, circa 1877

Actors as Five Men of the White Waves - Handsome portrait from Kunichika's series depicting actors as the "Shiranami Gonin" or "Five Men of the White Waves." This classic kabuki theme deals with five otokodate or street knights, based on an actual gang of five thieves in Kyoto. Each print features a half-length portrait of a young dandy as the cover of a book or magazine, with a page turned back at left. Nice expressive figures detailed with fine line work in the hair and burnishing in the black kimono collars. An interesting and unusual format.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Image Size - 13 5/8" x 9 1/4"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. A few small wormholes, thinning area in subject, small loss at left edge, repaired. Slight toning and soiling, faint ink offsetting, slight rubbing. Paper slightly curled. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
