Comments - Terrific view of the busy Nakano-cho street in the Yoshiwara during the Niwaka Festival. At left, a group of courtesans and their kamuro or child apprentices watch the activities from a verandah. Below, women dressed in male costumes and carrying red lanterns and folding fans are gathered alongside a lion dancer. At lower right, a performance seems to be taking place on a temporary stage. Teahouses line the crowded streets, with patrons looking down from the verandahs beneath red paper lanterns. A full moon glows high in the dark night sky. An intriguing subject, wonderfully detailed.
