Kato Kiyomasa Kakemono, 1867

Comments - Fantastic kakemono or vertical diptych portrait of the great warrior Kato Kiyomasa, one of the three senior commanders during the Seven-Year War with Korea. He sits on a stool staring straight ahead at the viewer, gripping a pole arm with one hand, his other resting on his knee. He wears a fine suit of armor over a matching blue floral kimono and matching hakama pants. His battle helmet is topped with horns and a flower, his circular mon or crest emblazoned on his chest. The personal banner behind his head reads "Hail Lotus Sutra." A bold design with fantastic detail, set against a deep blue background. A rare early Yoshitoshi kakemono and a great choice for a samurai enthusiast.

Artist - Yoshitoshi (1839 - 1892)

Image Size - 28 1/8" x 9 1/4"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Two separate panels. Small V-shaped tear near bottom left, repaired. Faint toning, slight rubbing at edges. Please see photos for details. Nice overall.
