Sekitori-rank Wrestlers on Their Way to a Tournament at Hitotsumebashi, 1859

Comments - Terrific view of two sumo wrestlers and attendants crossing a bridge as they make their way to a tournament at Hitotsumebashi. The two athletes are sekitori, wrestlers ranked in one of the top two professional classes of the sport. The wrestler in the center is Shiranui, and he wears a blue coat over a blue and gray diamond print kimono, a white cloth in his hand. The sumo carries a folding fan and is dressed in a black coat over a blue kimono with print fabrics inset at the hem. At right, a young sumo carries a furry black bundle over his shoulder, his plaid robe tucked up at the waist for easier walking. Another man follows, perhaps a coach. A great image with large, colorful characters and fine bokashi shading in the background.

Artist - Toyonobu III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 14 3/8" x 29 3/4"

Condition - The print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three separate panels. A few small wormholes, slight thinning at upper left edge of center panel, repaired. Slight creasing. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
