Seventh Month: Tanabata Festival

Series; Edo Customs of the Twelve Months

Seventh Month: Tanabata Festival - Attractive Chikanobu design from his triptych series depicting the seasonal entertainments of upper-class ladies in Edo throughout the year. In this subject, women enjoy a walk during the Tanabata Festival, the banners seen flying high over Edo in the background. At right, a young girl reaches forward eagerly for a bowl held out by a street vendor in a tie-dyed kimono. In the center, a young boy carrying a parcel wrapped in green cloth around his shoulders stops to wave at a small dog following along at his feet. Behind them, a nobleman's procession crosses the square. A charming design, beautifully detailed.

Artist - Chikanobu (1838 - 1912)

Image Size - 14 1/4" x 27 3/4" + margins

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail. Three panels, not attached at the seams and backed with thin paper. Faint soiling and spotting in subject with areas of rubbing along edges. Minor creasing and wrinkling. Please see photos for details. Nice overall.
