Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido Road, 1854

Hiroshige II's Tokaido Road - Charming woodblock print from Hiroshige II's "Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido Road" series. Like his master Hiroshige, Hiroshige II focused on life on the Tokaido Road and the experiences of travelers passing along this famous route. Attractive landscapes provide a backdrop for beauties and samurai, pilgrims and peasants, crossing rivers, admiring the scenery, or stopping to rest and relax during the journey. This is a very early Hiroshige II series, signed "Shigenobu," the "go" or artist's name given to him by Hiroshige. Nicely detailed with attractive color and soft shading, these views provide a fascinating look at life in Edo era Japan.

Artist - Hiroshige II (1826 - 1869)

Image Size - 4 1/4" x 6 3/4" + margins as shown
