Series; Famous Restaurants of the Eastern Capital
Famous Restaurants of the Eastern Capital - Handsome print from a collaborative series by Toyokuni III and Hiroshige, published between 1852 and 1853. Toyokuni III created the large actor portraits in the foreground, with Hiroshige designing the smaller landscape and still-life insets relating to the featured restaurant or its location. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has many of these images in its collection. These attractive designs are beautifully colored and detailed, making them a great choice for a collector interested in
Takisoba Restaurant, 1852 - Terrific portrayal of Bando Takesaburo I in the role of Iinuma Katsugoro in the play "Hakone-reigen Izari-no-adauchi." During his quest to avenge his brother's murder, Katsugoro became crippled, losing the use of his legs. His faithful wife pulled him on a cart to the waterfall of Hakone, where his health was miraculously restored. The young warrior throws his hand up in the air, his hair unkempt and shaggy. The inset above by Hiroshige shows a porcelain sake bottle and cup on the floor next to a few trays at Takisoba Restaurant in Honjo-hitotsume. The landscape at left shows a bridge of the Sumida River. A handsome portrait from this interesting series.
