Series; The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido by Two Brushes

Fujieda: Fording the Seto River, 1855 - Wonderful image from the joint "Tokaido by Two Brushes" series by Hiroshige and Toyokuni III. Two porters carry a beauty riding in a palanquin. She busies herself emptying ashes from her pipe into a container, her hair protectively covered with a blue and white cloth. Above, Hiroshige depicts travelers fording the Seto River, with a man leading a heavily laden horse through the shallow water beneath graceful willow trees. A charming scene with fine bokashi shading in the water and sky.
