Yoshitsune's Troops at Ichi-no-tani, circa 1843 - 1846

Comments - Incredible scene of Yoshitsune leading his men down the steep hill of Hiyodori-goe Gorge in a surprise attack on the Taira at the Battle of Ichi-no-tani. Yoshitsune sits astride his black horse during the almost vertical descent of the slope, clinging to his mount as the dirt slips beneath the horse's hooves. Behind him, the legendary warrior Hatakeyama Shigetada carries his dappled horse over his shoulders to avoid possible injury to his animal. Other samurai use their bows or standards to help maintain their footing. At far left, the warrior monk Benkei perches on a rocky outcropping near a waterfall, his monk's cowl draped over his shoulders, using a weapon anchored by a chain to the trunk of a pine tree above to keep his balance. Rooftops spread out far below with the calm ocean beyond. A fantastic depiction of one of the most famous incidents of the 12th century Genpei War. A terrific samurai subject.
