Murasame and Matsukaze in the Old Days, 1896

Comments - Lovely image from a famous episode in the life of the ninth-century courtier Ariwara no Yukihira. Having offended the Fujiwara Clan, he was exiled to Suma Island for three years, where he met two sisters, Murasame and Matsukaze, who collected seawater for processing into salt. Both beauties fell in love with him, and after his departure, their spirits waited on the beach for his return. Here, Ariwara stands at left in formal dress wearing a long tunic and a black court cap. The sisters smile happily as they watch him, one gesturing with her finger. A straw apron is tied around the waist of her black kimono bordered with swirling water, her white under robe embossed with a diamond and circle pattern. The other beauty wears a kimono softly shaded from lavender to blue, over a red-orange under robe with a design of plovers in flight. The white trim of her robe features shimmering mica. The beach is detailed with metallic flecks, which have oxidized to a darker tone, and the rows of gently undulating waves are embossed. A wonderful design, beautifully drawn and detailed.
