Original Kuniteru (1808 - 1876) Japanese Woodblock Print
Flowers

Series; Snow, Moon, and Flowers, 1847 - 1852

Flowers - Lovely scene of Mitsuuji, the Country Genji, enjoying an evening of music with a pair of beauties. He relaxes on a bench at left, holding a flute in hand and smiling at his companions. The beauty in the center sits at the edge of the room, pulling up the sleeve of her red kimono while the woman at right carries in a koto wrapped in a brown floral cloth case. A fine reed blind flutters in the wind, the room opening onto a courtyard garden with a mansion in the distance and a view of the water beyond. Wonderful detail in the beautiful kimono fabrics and the home furnishings, including a vase patterned with Genji symbols holding a blossoming cherry branch. A charming design, nicely detailed with embossing in the yellow kimono trim and soft bokashi shading. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection.
