Series; Inner Chiyoda Palace (Chiyoda no Ooku)

Serving Spiced Rice Wine - This lovely subject depicts the custom of drinking spiced rice wine on the first day of the New Year to ensure good health. The youngest member of the family or group is served first, with a young lady bowing before an older palace matron. The bamboo and plum blossoms on the folding screen behind the women are traditionally associated with the New Year. Beautiful detail in this attractive subject with lightly embossed geometric patterning on the white areas of the women's kimonos. This image appears on page 172 of Bruce A. Coats's book "Chikanobu: Images of Modernity and Nostalgia."
