The Battle of Ichi-no-Tani, 1847 - 1852

Comments - Fantastic triptych depicting the famous battle at the Taira fortress of Ichi-no-Tani in 1184. The castle sat on a narrow strip of land with mountains on one side and the sea on the other. Minamoto no Yoshitsune split his men into three groups, sending a small detachment of men high into the mountains above the fortress, and other troops to the east and west along the coast. At the appointed time, all three attacked, with Yoshitsune and his men rushing down the hill at Hiyodorigoe at upper right, descending the steep cliff. Men perched on the rooftops and in the trees react with alarm at the sight, as the occupants of the palace below collect belongings and prepare to abandon the fortress. At lower right, men push and tug on a large wooden chest, a woman tumbling onto her back from the weight of her pack. In the center, a Taira general grips a sword, looking up defiantly while retainers in armor hurry about. A great design filled with wonderful detail and attractive color.
