Banquet at a Daimyo's Palace, 1847 - 1852

Comments - Fantastic scene of a banquet taking place at a daimyo's palace. Rooms on different levels are crowded with seated guests, each with his own meal on a tray. The retainers on the lower level have black lacquer trays, while those on the higher levels eat from red lacquer trays and have large platters of fish. Monks with shaved heads and wearing black coats over gray robes are serving some of the visitors. At bottom center, a monk tries to force a lacquer plate to a samurai's mouth, holding him by the wrist as he grimaces angrily. At lower right, a standing warrior gestures with his fan, pointing out where his companion should sit. At far left, some of the samurai peer into their bowls with puzzled expressions, as if unhappy about the food. An intriguing image with beautiful detail in elegant mansion and household furnishings.
