Battle in the Wars of the Taiheiki, 1849 - 1852

Comments - Dramatic scene from a battle during the 14th century wars between the Northern and Southern Courts in Japan, as described in the epic "Taiheiki." In the center, a warrior on a dappled horse plunges over a cliff, the animal neighing with fright as it falls. A samurai mounted on a black horse at right glares angrily at the falling warrior, gripping his spear. In a great display of agility, a samurai on a brown horse at left uses his pole arm to block an arrow shot by the archer at far left, the arrow snapping in two as it contacts the blade. A terrific subject with wonderful detail and rugged natural setting.
