Original 19th century Japanese Woodblock Print
Tenjin Kakemono

Comments - Handsome kakemono or vertical diptych portrait of Tenjin, the Shinto deification of the exiled ninth-century poet Sugawara no Michizane. He stands on a platform wearing a voluminous black robe and court cap, holding a blossoming plum branch. Swags of drapery emblazoned with his mon or family crest hang overhead, the same design appearing on his robe. Below the platform, a verandah leads to steps guarded by lion statues. Wonderful detail in this fine portrait of a beloved scholar.
