March Kyogen at the Kabukiza Theater, 1901

Comments - Intriguing kabuki scene featuring Ichikawa Danjuro as the nobleman Mito Koman and Onoe Kikugoro as a samurai holding a mask. Koman leans forward with a grim frown, stretching out the sleeve of his boldly patterned kimono. In his other hand he holds his sword, the blade visible behind his back. He wears a flowing red wig with two white stripes down the back, and a yellow court cap. The samurai at left holds leering mask with bulging yellow eyes, watching his companion out of the corners of his eyes with a suspicious frown. A great design with large colorful figures set off by a plain background dotted with confetti-like shapes. Includes embossing in the white stripes of the red wig.
