The Coquettish Type

Series; Twelve Views of Modern Women

Publisher - Adachi from a rare series of Edo masterwork designs. Adachi publisher seal in margin or on reverse.

Adachi was one of the most respected publishers of the 20th century. Their woodblocks were printed to the highest standards with excellent color and fine detail. Founded in 1925, Adachi also chose interesting and varied subjects for their prints and was the only publisher of many famous old ukiyo-e images.

The Coquettish Type - Charming image of a flirtatious young geisha biting down on a tissue while looking slyly out of the corners of her eyes. Her hair is piled high on her head with a large tortoise shell comb. Her pale blue under robe is beautifully patterned with butterflies, the soft colors contrasting nicely her solid black kimono. A cartouche at upper right takes the form of a scroll unrolling to reveal a handsome landscape with Mt. Fuji towering in the background. An attractive Edo era design.

Artist - Eisen (1790 - 1848)

Image Size - 14 1/2" x 10" + margins as shown
