Courtesan and Sweetheart, 1857

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene from the play "Moyo Doro no Kikukiri" of a man visiting his sweetheart, a lovely courtesan, in her private quarters. He looks up with a dismayed frown, holding a pipe in one hand and the handle of a tobacco set with a few letters tucked into it. The beauty looks down with an unhappily surprised expression, rubbing her forehead with her hand, her eyes wide. Her blue and yellow outer kimono features stylized blossoms, and her hair is arranged in two loops, adorned with combs and hairpins. At left, an elegant robe with a design of autumn grasses and vines hangs from a black lacquer stand, and a niche at right holds a hanging scroll. The actor at left is Ichikawa Kodanji IV. An attractive image with wonderful color and detail in the fabrics and setting.
