Series; New Selection of Mirror of Honor

Dueling Monks, 1898 - Fantastic scene of a pair of warrior monks dueling beside a palace at night. One samurai raises a large club above his head with both hands as he steps on the back of his fallen enemy. The handle of his opponent's naginata has been snapped in two, and he clutches one end in each hand as he struggles to free himself. Another warrior falls forward at left, his flaming torch lying on the ground nearby. At right, a samurai shields his eyes with his hand as he stands on the verandah, watching the approach of troops with banners flying above the courtyard fence. Beautifully drawn and colored with expressive figures, detailed with embossing in the monk's white cowl and touches of burnishing in the armor and weapons. A striking composition.
