Series; Fashionable Pleasures of New Year

Reading, 1847 - 1852 - Attractive triptych depicting a beauty reading from a series illustrating fashionable pastimes in the New Year. She sits on a cushion in the center with a book in hand, smiling at her companion over her shoulder. At right, another woman pushes a small lacquered cart stacked with books and scrolls for reading. The wheels are fancifully shaped like many-petaled flowers, echoing the blossom design of the lacquer itself. She smiles as she leans over, the sleeves of her colorful, chrysanthemum patterned kimono trailing on the floor beside her. Several books are scattered on the floor, and the folding screen behind the women features a scene of a blossoming cherry tree above a river. A charming subject with wonderful detail in the interior setting and household furnishings.
