Lord Wakasanosuke and the Loyal Honzo, 1857

Comments - Handsome kabuki double portrait from Act 2 of the classic drama about the 47 ronin, "Kanadehon Chushingura." After Lord Wakasanosuke vows to avenge Moronao's offensive behavior towards Lady Kaoyo, his former retainer Honzo pledges his support for his master's decision. Here, the young nobleman looks over his shoulder with a sober expression, while the gray-haired Honzo, scowls unhappily, secretly planning to offer Moronao presents to soothe him and avoid a confrontation with Wakasanosuke. Nice expressive figures set against a softly shaded background.
