Tora Gozen and Soga Goro, 1844

Comments - Interesting image of the samurai Soga Goro, the elder of the famous Soga Brothers, writing a poem slip in the home of his mistress, the beautiful Tora Gozen. He sits next to an oil lamp at left, frowning sullenly as he pauses with brush in hand, composing his death poem before he and his brother go to avenge their father's death. The beauty watches him with a sad, concerned expression as she wipes a comb with a tissue, knowing she may never see him again. A young girl places a basin of water on the floor before her, he long sleeves of Tora's kimono tied back with a red sash to keep them from getting wet as she washes. A koto rests in a niche at right, a blossoming plum tree frames a view of the evening sky. Nice expressive figures and a handsome interior setting.
