Nursemaid and Child, 1851

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of a nursemaid and her charge, who sits on the floor at her side, tugging on her robe to get her attention. The matron pays no attention to him, looking over her shoulder with a suspicious frown. She holds a large box of sweets in her hand, and wears an elegant gray outer kimono patterned with pink and blue blossoms. The young boy wears a blue tie-dyed robe under a black and white checked kimono, a dotted cloth wrapped around his neck. A standing screen at left features a crane in flight above the ocean with the setting sun in the background. From left, the actors are Sawamura Yoshijiro I and Sawamura Chojuro V. A handsome design with nice detail.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 14" x 9 3/4"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Vertical fold near left edge. A few small holes, repaired. Very slight soiling, slight rubbing near edges. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
