Confrontation at a Shrine, 1885

Comments - Great kabuki scene of a confrontation taking place at a shrine. The wild-haired rogue in the center looks up with a scowl as he holds a long scroll open before him. The young samurai at right grips his sword, looking questioningly up at the beauty in the center, who throws her arms out wide in alarm. The warrior at right draws back his blade, ready to attack the rogue, a sinister frown on his face. Stone stairs lead to a shrine building behind them, and a rushing waterfall can be seen at left. Cherry blossoms in bright pink and white frame the scene overhead. From left, the actors are Bando Kakitsu I, Onoe Kikugoro V, Onoe Kikunosuke II, and Kataoka Gado III. A lively scene with large expressive figures and a handsome setting, detailed with fine line work in the hair and vivid color.
