Original Chikanobu (1838 - 1912) Japanese Woodblock Print
Princess Yaegaki

Comments - Attractive kabuki scene of Princess Yaegaki startled by the appearance of the new gardener Minosaku, who looks just like her dead fiance Katsuyori (and actually is). She leans against the doorway at left, one hand resting on the sliding shoji screen, her chin tilted down with a sad expression. The gardener stares unhappily back at the matron Nureginu, whose own husband was killed as a substitute for Katsuyori, frightened that she may reveal his secret. He wears a purple floral kamishimo over a deep red kimono, his hand resting atop the hilt of his sword. An interesting design from this famous story, with nice large figures and vibrant color.

Artist - Chikanobu (1838 - 1912)
