Tokiwa Gozen and Her Children Fleeing in the Snow Kakemono, circa 1835 - 1840

Comments - Beautiful kakemono or vertical diptych of the lovely Lady Tokiwa and her three sons escaping through the snow from Kyoto to nearby Fushimi after her husband Minamoto no Yoshitomo was murdered. She clutches her infant son to her chest while the two older boys huddle under her enveloping kimono sleeves. Snow blankets her wide black lacquer hat and the pine tree behind them, flakes still falling through the gray sky. Two small birds flutter across the sky above. A beautiful print with lovely detail and soft shading in the wintry sky. A terrific Kuniyoshi design.

Artist - Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861)

Image Size - 28 1/8" x 9 5/8"

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Two attached panels. Wormholes, a few small losses, repaired. Toning and creasing, slight soiling. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
