Commissioned Officers Receiving the Gift of Sake for the Suppression of the Satsuma Rebellion, 1879

Comments - Intriguing scene of a ceremony where the gift of sake will be presented to the Imperial Army commanders who conquered the rebel samurai during the Satsuma Rebellion. The officers are gathered at right, watching respectfully as the Meiji Empress bows in the center, wearing an elegant purple brocade robe and a golden headdress. Ladies-in-waiting kneel behind her, while in the background at left, two other women carry in offering trays of fruit along the wooden walkway. The palace is nicely furnished with a colorful diamond patterned carpet and folding screens with designs of a peacock and cranes in flight, with a fine reed blind rolled up overhead. A handsome design with vibrant color and touches of burnishing.

Artist - Yoshikei (1858 - 1922)

Image Size - 13 5/8" x 28 3/8" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three separate panels, backed with paper. Very slight soiling, a couple creases at corners. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
