Shinozuka Iga no Kami (Sadatsuna)

Series; Yoshitoshi's Courageous Warriors

Shinozuka Iga no Kami (Sadatsuna) - Bold design of Shinozuka Iga no Kami (Sadatsuna) gripping an enormous wooden beam from Kawai Castle at Seta in Iyo Province. One of Nitta no Yoshisada's trusted retainers, Shinozuka was said to possess incredible strength. Here, he uses a great pillar from the palace as a weapon, ready to hurl it at his enemies. He grasps the beam with both hands, hugging it to his chest as he takes the weight on his back leg, preparing to lunge ahead and toss it into the air. A fantastic image, beautifully detailed with burnishing in the armor and handsome wood grain impression in the background. The Los Angeles County Museum of Art has this image in its collection. A dramatic composition. This print is from an 1886 edition published by Tsunajima Kamekichi.
