Courtesan Visiting Her Secret Lover, 1849

Comments - Attractive kabuki scene of the courtesan Ohatsu of the Tenmaya teahouse visiting her secret lover, the clerk Tokubei of the Hiranoya soy shop in the play "Shimo no Tsurugi Sonezaki Shinju." She pauses as she waits in the garden outside, tilting her head coyly and smiling. Inside, Tokubei slowly slides open the door, looking furtively over her shoulder. He wears a striped kimono with red floral insets, lifting the hem with one hand. From left, the actors are Onoe Kikujiro II as Tenamya Ohatsu and Ichikawa Danjuro VIII as Hiranoya Tokubei. A handsome design with a nicely detailed setting.

Condition - With excellent color and detail as shown. Two panels, attached at the seams. A few small holes and thinning spots, repaired, blends well. Creasing, slight soiling and rubbing. Please see photos for details.
