Series; Twelve Months in the South
The Tenth Month - Attractive illustration for the Tenth Month from Kiyonaga's series depicting "Twelve Months in the South." Here, a man chats with two courtesans in a doorway, smiling over his shoulder at them, a dotted robe drape over the shoulder of his black kimono. A young boy waits next to him playing with a couple of miniature arrows, his head shaved as an acolyte or apprentice monk. The beauty at right wears a tie-dyed kimono with an embossed dotted pattern, clutching the edges shut before her. The other woman's outer kimono slips off her shoulders, revealing an under robe with an embossed design. Sliding panels open onto the rooms inside, with a black lacquer chest and an offering tray with a bowl on it visible through one door. Gracefully drawn with delicate line work. A lovely Edo era subject.
