Ichikawa Danjuro VIII as Nuregami Chogoro, 1852

Comments - Interesting kabuki portrait of Ichikawa Danjuro VIII as the sumo wrestler Nuregami Chogoro. The older experienced sumo purposely lost a match to the young Hanaregoma Chokichi in hopes of earning a favor from his patron. Here, Chogoro hops on one foot as he tucks up the back of his blue and brown patterned kimono, worn over a red loincloth trimmed with swinging fringe. His hair is pulled back into a top knot, and he has a white towel wrapped about his neck. Detailed with fine line work in the hair and a nice setting outside a house with a brushwood garden fence at left.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 13 3/4" x 9 1/8"

Condition - The print with excellent detail as shown. A few small wormholes and holes, repaired. Slight creasing and soiling, very slight rubbing at edges. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
