Ichikawa Kuzo II as a Priest, 1839

Comments - Handsome kabuki portrait of Ichikawa Kuzo II as a priest in the famous play "Musume Dojoji." The priest at Dojoji Temple fall under the spell of a shirabyoshi dancer who has persuaded them to allow her to dance at the dedication of a temple bell. He stares ahead with a worried expression, his eyes wide. His black outer robe is pushed down to the waist, worn over a white kimono. A string of prayer beads is loops around his ear, a practice thought to help control temple. The enormous bell hangs overhead, with a blossoming pink cherry tree framing the sky. A great expressive figure.
