Nakamura Shikan as a Boatman

Comments - Terrific large head kabuki portrait of Nakamura Shikan in a brash aragoto role as a boatman, staring down with intense anger, his lips tightly sealed in a frown. His red stage makeup and flared wig add to his imposing presence. His robe features a tie-dyed pattern radiating outwards from the neck, a design favored by boatmen, trimmed with black collar. The dramatic figure is set off by a deep blue background, bordered with the gray silhouettes of autumn grasses and plants. A great design, beautifully detailed with fine line work in the hair and cloth embossing in the head scarf.

Image Size - 14 1/8" x 9 5/8"
