Samurai Struggle, 1853

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of two samurai struggling on a road at night. The fellow in the black kimono has fallen back onto his knee, throwing his arm out in alarm, frowning unhappily. Another samurai stands over him with the drawstring of a purse in his mouth, ready to draw his sword. He wears a brown coat with a subtle burnished geometric pattern over a green kimono tucked into tan hakama pants. At right, a willow tree in dark silhouette frames the evening sky above green foliage. The actors are Bando Hikosaburo IV and Arashi Kichisaburo III as Gokujuni Saemon. Nice expressive figures, with bokashi shading in the background.
