The Witch Ibaraki Retrieving Her Arm, 1967

Yoshitoshi Mori - Born in Tokyo in 1898, Yoshitoshi Mori was one of the best known artists of the sosaku hanga, or creative prints, movement in Japan. Originally a textile designer, Mori graduated from the Kawabata School of Fine Arts and studied stencil-dyeing of fabrics. It wasn't until 1954, after the age of 50, that he began making stencil prints on paper using a method called "kappazuri." He became a printmaker fulltime in 1962, and had numerous shows in both Japan and internationally. Mori's works can be seen on display in some of the finest museums in the world, including the Tokyo Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Art Institute of Chicago.

Comments - Fantastic, extra large format print from the tale of the witch Ibaraki, a demon who dwelled at Rashomon Gate near Toji temple in Kyoto. Lord Minamoto no Yorimitsu (Raiko), sent his trusted retainer Watanabe no Tsuna to slay the demon, but during the fierce battle, Tsuna only managed to cut off her arm. Later as Watanabe performed Shinto prayers over the arm, Ibaraki returned disguised as his elderly aunt, retrieved the arm, and flew away with it. Here, the evil Ibaraki clutches the dismembered arm in her hand as she soars through the air, her face contorted and her long hair streaming above her head. Her blue and black kimono features a bold geometric pattern. A terrific modern interpretation of this famous legend, with the hair running off the top edge adding a sense of movement through the sky. Printed on textured handmade paper with deckle (rough) edges at top and bottom. A great limited edition Yoshitoshi Mori print.
